The Church has always had within her some "heretics" in all orders of ministry and has nonetheless been able to overcome their negative witness and preach the Gospel to all nations as we continue to do. "Schism being worse than heresy" continues to be largely true. Had the Episcopal Church followed Ignatius' call to "be deaf" to those who deny the full humanity, death and resurrection of Christ, instead of letting them remain shepherds - bishops, we would not be in the situation we are in now. We failed in our efforts to maintain sound doctrine. Bishop Ackerman has carried himself far more like Ignatius than the leadership of the Episcopal Church, which has looked far more like Rome than it ever has in its history. I taught fifth-grade boys for 18 years. They can see right through you when you don't believe. I learned as much from them as I think they did from me. We worked through the 10 Commandments and the Book of John of year - Law and Gospel, as it were. By the end of the year the students knew them backwards and forwards. The challenge was to take these boys and have them make their faith their own instead of just something they were doing because their parents said to. When you do that work for such a long time it is a definite blessing to see those young boys turn into Godly men. Being a Sunday school teacher is a blessed calling.
